XAVIER DAY december 3 th 2009   -   Soccer Tournament in Bungoma

Following a suggestion of the Kenyan Vocation Committee that Xavier Day celebrations be enhanced by organizing games for local kids, the six first-and second-year Postulants welcomed four soccer teams for what may be the First Annual Xavier Day Tournament in Bungoma.  All of the young brothers, one aspirant, and some of the workers at St. Joseph's Centre helped reinforce a team of Bungoma Street Kids that lost 2-0 to a team of boys from the Namamuka neighbourhood.  The second match saw the strong team from an orphanage in Webuye, 20 miles away, defeat the team from nearby Mwiruti Secondary School (Br. John Wamalwa's alma mater), 5-0.  In playoffs matching losers against losers and winners against winners, Mwiruti and Webuye were the victors.
Each participating team earned a new soccer ball.  Short speeches were made that included information on the Xaverian Brothers and on St. Francis Xavier.  It is always worth mentioning in Kenya that almost 500 years ago Xavier sojourned briefly in Malindi, Kenya, on the Indian Ocean, when heading to Goa.

Towards 5 PM, more than a hundred hungry boys and girls finally lunched on boiled beans, rice, cabbage and pineapple drink.  The community's 5:30 PM Feast Day liturgy began at 6:30 and was followed by a banquet of chicken, home-grown rabbit, and stewed beef, as well as a green mango streusel dessert that mimicked apple cobbler.

In recent weeks, the Street Boys and the Namamuka boys have helped slash the overgrown grass of the soccer field, preparing it for fine trimming with the power mower that is once again running well.  One other day, a hundred Mwiruti students, girls and boys, helped the community shell half of this year's maize harvest.  All these volunteers have also appreciated the menu of beans and rice.
